Body Trim Plate - aka 'trim tag'

1953-1962 Corvette

These model years did not have a Body Trim Plate.

The only way to determine the interior trim and original paint is some type of paperwork such as a dealer invoice. There is also the possibility the paint code was written in chalk under the spare tire cover. Interior/exterior combinations were somewhat limited during these years and can be of assistance if the body color has been changed or interior changed.

1963-1967 Corvette

Body plates were introduced with the 1963 model year. The data included the body date, year and style number, body number, interior trim code, and paint code. The 1964 through 1967 bodies varied depending on the year and the body plant, A.O. Smith or St. Louis. Most 1967 big block bodies were built at St. Louis, less than 10% were built at the AO Smith plant in Ionia, MI. due to issues with getting the big block stripes painted correctly. AO Smith Corvettes did not build cars with side pipes.

1963 body plate dates are a letter and number for the month and week such as this example of H3 or April, 3rd week.

The 1974-1967 body plate date changed to month/day of the month such as this example of F09 or February 0.

1968-1978 Corvette

The 1968 through 1978 body plates underwent a major change in their design. The body date was moved to the top right corner. Through the 1973 model year the trim and paint codes were a three-digit number. The model year and style designations were gone.

The 1974 model year saw the paint code change to a two-digit number and the letter "L."

The 1978 model year saw the beginning of special paint schemes, notably the Indy Pace Car Edition and the Silver Anniversary Edition. The paint codes on these cars shows the special paint schemes with two paint codes, one for the main upper body color and one for the lower body color such as "13U 07M" for the Silver Anniversary Edition and "19U 47M" for the Indy Pace Car Edition.

1979-1982 Corvette

The 1979-1981 model years saw the verbiage "GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION CERTIFIES TO THE DEALER THAT THIS VEHICLE CONFORMS TO ALL FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD APPLICALBE AT THE TIME OF MANUFACTURE" disappeared from the body plate. In 1982 this blank area was replaced with, simply "CHEVROLET."
