1997 LS1 Aluminum V8
For the first time in Chevrolet's history, the small block V8 features an all aluminum engine block with cast iron cylinder liners. Displacement remains at 5.7 liters although it has a slightly smaller bore (3.90") but a longer stroke (3.62") vs. the 'old' 350cid 5.7 liter engine with a 4.0" bore and 3.48" stroke.
A horsepower rating of 380 @5 ,600 RPM and torque of 350 @ 4,400 RPM with a redline of 6,000 RPM. Hydraulic roller lifters and rocker arms makes for great reliability will little maintenance. A 4-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission is rear-mounted with overdrive (4L60E) is standard with a Borg-Warner rear-mounted 6-speed manual (T56) being optional. Two rear axle ratios are available for the automatic, 2.73:1 is standard and 3.15:1 optional while the manual transmission rear axle ratio is 3.42:1. The final drive ratios are 1.91:1 with the 2.73:1 rear axle ratio, 2.21:1 with the optional 3.15:1 rear axle ratio and 1.71:1 for the 6-speed manual.
