Identifying a 1968 RS and/or SS Camaro
Non-RS, non-SS front and rear views. Note parking lamps in grille and
backup lamps integral with the tail lamps.
Note the difference in the two types of gas caps. The lower photo is
believed to be original while the upper photo is believed to be an aftermarket
or Chevrolet accessory gas cap.
Rally Sport (RS) [RPO Z22]
An appearance only option that consists of concealed headlights (requiring)
a different grille and centered RS emblem, back-up lights under the
rear bumper and included the Z21 style trim package. A different front
valance panel with the front parking lamps/turn signals mounted in the
valance instead of the grille.
Super Sport (SS) [RPO L48 or L34/L35/L78]
The SS option could be ordered as a stand-alone package or in conjunction with the RS option. When ordered with the RS option, the SS badging took precedence.
Note the only real change up front is the SS badging on the grille.
Backup lamps were moved to the inner most position of the tail lamps
and tail panel was blacked out (semi-gloss) on all colors except black-painted
cars.
Front fenders got SS badging. Shown here with D90 Stripe.
Front fenders got SS badging. Shown here with D91 Stripe.
RS/SS Combination
When both the RS and SS options are combined, the RS features like hide-away
headlamps, rear taillights, back-up lights, etc. are featured but badging
of the SS takes precedence over the RS badging.
Note how the blacked-out rear panel color extends to the trunk lip.
The Famous (or infamous) D88 Multi-Color Bumble Bee Stripe
Did any of these get into production? The camaros.org website on
shows them in a matrix with n/a sold; Tailfins and bowties do not
show any D88 options sold in 1968. So...?
The Assembly Instruction Manual for 1968 shows the stripe being
canceled on February 28, 1968 so, certainly I would think, some
could have been ordered.
