1969 Camaro Trim Tag Xnn-Codes

The Xnn codes on 1969 Camaro trim tags were a mid-year addition to the Norwood's Camaros beginning with trim tag body date 12B. The codes were added to assist Fisher Body workers in identifying body trim and paint changes needed for various models. The codes are divided into two groups; those with RPO Z21 (Stripe Trim Group) and those without.

RPO Z21 was part of the RPO Z22 RS (Rally Sport) option. The RS optioned Camaros can only be X11, X22, or X33 coded. However X11, X22, or X33 Camaros did not necessarily have the RS option so one cannot tell if an X11, X22, or X33-coded trim tag also indicates the RS option. Additionally, X44, X55, or X66-coded trim tag Camaros cannot have the Z21 style trim nor the Z22 RS option. Confusing?

X22 - SS396 X55 - SS350
X33 - Z28 X66 - SS396
  X77 - Z28

* COPO Camaros were the exception as most COPO Camaros were built using bodies coded with X11 or X44. Some early COPO Camaros have X22 or X66-coded trim tags.

Z10 and Z11 codes were used at Norwood to indicate the Indy Pace Car replica coupe and convertible, respectively.

Two additional Norwood trim tag codes could be combined with the X-codes are:
** D80 - equipped with the RPO D80 spoiler but the code was not always used.
** A - equipped with RPO A31  power windows but not always used.

The RPO Z21 Style Trim included:
** Bright vertical bars in tail lamp lens.
** Bright drip rail moldings on the coupe.
** Bright wheel opening moldings.
** Wheel opening paint pinstripes (n/a with RPO D90 stripe).
** Bright rear quarter simulated louver moldings.
** Bright headlamp bezel moldings.
** Black body still (except certain colors).

So, just what did the Xnn codes mean to the assembly line worker? The X22, X33, X66, and X77 codes are easily explained by the differences in paint (Z28 stripe and SS396 tailpan). It is the X11, X44, and X55 codes that can be confusing; the non-Z21/Z22 SS Camaros did include a subset of Z21 items.

Conclusions:

The X11 code always includes (1) black body sill, (2) rear quarter moldings, (3) Driprail moldings [coupe], and (4) wheel opening moldings; X55 does not include the Driprail molding or wheel opening moldings.

Wheel opening stripes, headlamp bezels, and tail lamp lenses were not a factor in the Xnn codes. The addition of RPO Z22 (since the Rally Sport option had different trim) has the same effect on the codes as does RPO Z21.

The X22 and X33 codes have the same meaning as the X11 code but without the blacked-out tailpan for X22 and the added Z28 stripe for X22. The X66 code has the same meaning as X55 but with a blacked-out tailpan. The X77 code is the same as X44 but with a Z28 stripe.
