Identifying a 1969 RS and/or SS and/or Z28 Camaro
Standard Front/Rear
Standard (non RS, non SS, and non Z28) optioned 1969 Camaros feature a blue bow tie centered in the grille. Tail lamp's feature backup lamps as the center unit and centered blue bow tie emblem.
RPO Z28 - Special Engine
The 1969 Z28 option was listed as RPO Z28 - Special Engine. Spoilers were optional on Z28s thru approximately April of 1969 but were included after that. Chambered exhaust (shown here) was initially standard on Z28s until November of 1968 due to noise complaints but were optional until they sere discontinued in May of 1969. Note the blue bow tie was replaced with Z/28 emblems in the grille and tailpan with the grille emblem being offset to the driver side since it was a flat emblem. Note the difference in the tail lamps on a 'standard' Z28 above and a Z28-optioned Camaro along with the RS package below.
RS (RPO Z22) w/RPO Z28
When both the RS and Z/28 options are combined, the RS features like hide-away headlamps, rear taillights, back-up lights, etc. are featured but badging of the Z/28 takes precedence over the RS badging
SS Option (RPO Z27)
The SS option (RPO Z27) featured blacked-out grille and, on light colored 396cid engine optioned Camaros, a blacked-out rear tail panel with SS badging on both front and back. The blacked-out rear tail panel was not used with the L48 350cid engine, only the 396cid engine. The SS option was not engine specific but did require either the L48 350cid engine or one of the three 396cid engines.
RS/SS Combination (RPO Z22/RPO Z27)
When both the RS and SS options are combined, the RS features like hide-away headlamps, rear taillights, back-up lights, etc. are featured but badging of the SS takes precedence over the RS badging. As with the SS option mantra, the 350cid engine option tail panel was body color, the 396cid engine option tail panel was blacked-out.
Indy Pace Car Conversion with RS/SS Combination (RPO Z22/RPO Z27)
The Indy Pace Car conversion was initially limited to 133 cars with
130 used for officials, VIPs, and courtesy cars. They were so
popular that Chevrolet came up with the RPO Z11 option to outfit
more for the public due to interest. Chevrolet built 3,675 Camaro
Pace Car replicas. These were outfitted with both the RS and SS
options. Most were powered by the 350cid engine and the 396cid
engine was an additional option and shown here.
