1970 Special Paint

Special paint option (RPO ZP3) hasd been around for years as Chevrolet's means to allow any available color that year for special orders such as construction vehicle is what those in the Fleet & Special Order group to call "construction orange" and such government entities as the US Forest Serviice  for a special green.

For some reason, buyers of 1970 Chevelles got the message and found they could order their car in any color from any year, 1970 or earlier, from the Dupont paint catalog. Shown here are just some of those that have turned up with documentaiton. SPecial paint is brokden down into two elemnents, the 3-digit numbers 926 and 927 are for non-metallic and metallic paint and the 5-digit number is the Dupont mixing formula. Naturally each color hadd a 'sales name' and that is shown in the photo's legend.

See this page for more information on special paint from Jim Mattison who worked in the Fleet & Special Order (F&SO) offices back inthe day.
