Propeller Shaft (Driveshaft) Stripe Colors - 1970-1972
Driveshafts, or as GM calls them propeller shafts, vary depending on the particular Chevelle model, engine, transmission, rear end combination. Colored stripes are painted on the driveshaft to identify their application. The following tables' information is derived from build sheets (broadcast copy sheets) from 1970 through 1972 Chevelle assembly plants. These stripes were also used in previous years but due lack of documentation for these early years, only 1970 through 1972 are listed here. The codes shown are in the format of only two colors, often a third color is used but not listed on the build sheets. The empty cells represent no known (confirmed) information found or in the case of the LS5/LS6 engines are limited to the M22 or M40 transmission.
The information presented here is an excerpt from the book 'Chevelle Restoration and Authenticity Guide 1970-1972' written by Rick Nelson and me (Dale McIntosh). The book is currently out of color print but can be ordered at CarTech Books as a 'print on demand.' I am working on a browser-based version of the book. Look for it soon on ChevelleCD.net.
