Pontiac VIN Breakdown
For the 1964 and 1965 model years, the GTO package was an option and
can not be identified by the VIN. The 1966 through 1971 model years
can be identified as a GTO by the second and third digits of the VIN
being 42.
A 1965 GTO built at the Pontiac. MI., and Kansas City assembly plants will have the
letter "N" on the trim tag in group 5.
That's not the case with a Fremont-built 1965 Lemans, nothing on the
trim tag will indicate the GTO option.
