Identifying a 1967 Z28 Camaro
The Z28 option did not get any special badging for 1967 and only 602 1967 Camaros were ordered with the Z28 Special Engine option. The Z28 option was only available with the sport coupe, no Z28 convertibles were built.
From GM's Information Kit, the Z28 option included:
All other V8 engines mounted the alternator behind the upper adjustment
brace. It's amazing how many people get this simple detail wrong and
mount the alternator behind the brace.
The 302 cid engine used a different alternator brace setup and mounted
the alternator behind the braces. These same braces were used
on 1967 Chevelle with the L79 engine option. Note one brace is orange
and one is black. The orange brace comes with the engine from the engine
plant and was painted along with the engine itself while the black brace
is installed by the final assembly plant when the engine is dressed.
The 1967 model year is the only year group option codes were used on
the Fisher Body Number Plate. In group 4, the letter "L" is
used for the Z28 option. The letter "L" was also used in groups
1, 2, and 3 but for different options. Very early Z28s and L78s were
coded with the letter "P" in group 4. Later Z28s got the letter "L"
and L78s got the letter "K." See the
trim tag page for more details.
All 1967 Z28 Camaros had two, wide painted stripes that started at the
front header panel and onto the low spots on the cowl vent panel on
the front. The rear stripes started at the rear window panel and extended
to the end of the trunk lid.
A rear spoiler is a popular user add-on and available as an 'over the
counter' item from dealers in late 1967. A front 'chin spoiler' valence
(shown in the front view photo above) was part of the spoiler package.
