Typical 1967 Fisher Body plate breakdown
Do not confuse the Fisher Body unit number plate information with that found on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate. The series depiction on the Fisher Body unit number plate does NOT have the meaning as the VIN plate. The "12" is the Camaro model code, "4" or "6" is the interior level code, and "37" is the body style code. The 12437 style breaks down to Camaro (12), standard interior (4) and coupe body style (37). The 12667 style breaks down to Camaro (12), custom interior (6) and convertible body style (67). The 1968 and 1969 model years the third digit was fixed to "4" and had no meaning.
Los Angeles and Norwood have different information on their plates. Please check the individual assembly plant for specifics.
Line 1: Production date of vehicle. A typical production date is 02C
This production date of 02C decodes to February (02) in the third
week (C).
Unfortunately, nobody has ever defined what dates are associated with
a week letter as they vary from plant to plant.
01 - January | 07 - July |
02 - February | 08 - August |
03 - March | 09 - September |
04 - April | 10 - October |
05 - May | 11 - November |
06 - June | 12 - December |
A - First Week
B - Second Week
C - Third Week
D - Fourth Week
E - Fifth Week
Los Angeles (Van Nuys) used a letter and 1- to 3-digit number to indicate approximate day and scheduling number. Beginning with the letter "A" on the first day of a month's production and the 1- to 3-digit number reset after 999; day letter was reset the next production day.
NORWOOD INTERIOR TRIM The interior color code of the Camaro is coded as a single letter stamped in the upper right corner; "K" in the example above
|
LOS ANGELES PRODUCTION DAY
Los Angeles stamped the production day and that day's sequence in the upper right corner; O297 ~ Production day (O), sequence number for that day (297) where "O" is the 15th work day of the month and "297" is the 297th Camaro scheduled for that day and would be reset to 001 if needed.
Line 2: The first two-digit number on line two is the model year of production followed by the Fisher Body style designation, assembly plant, and the Fisher Body unit number used for production purposes.
SERIES/MODEL IDENTIFICATION (for trim level purposes only, not for engine type identification)
12400 SERIES - STANDARD INTERIOR
MODEL 12437 ~ 2-DOOR COUPE
MODEL 12467 ~ 2-DOOR CONVERTIBLE
12600 SERIES - CUSTOM INTERIOR
MODEL 12637 ~ 2-DOOR COUPE
MODEL 12667 ~ 2-DOOR CONVERTIBLE
Line 3: Interior trim and lower/upper paint (or vinyl/convertible) codes.
PLANT DESIGNATION
NOR for Norwood or LOS for Los Angeles
FISHER BODY NUMBER
Each Fisher Body plant would sequence the body number as scheduled
and not by order of final assembly. Los Angeles body numbers were generally
sequenced by style number, 12437, 12637, 12467, and 12667. Highest known
body numbers for each style are:
12437 - 39,907
12467 - 1,954
12637 - 20,988
12667 - 2,188
The total of body numbers (65,037) is greater than the total Camaros
built at Los Angeles (65,008) leaving one to surmise some orders may
have been canceled before they were built.
INTERIOR TRIM
Bench or bucket seat color and a letter to designate whether headrests were ordered. See the interior page for details.
PAINT COLOR
The paint code for lower and upper body colors are noted here with
a single letter for each. If a coupe was fitted with a vinyl top the
second position is a number corresponding to the vinyl top color; likewise
if the car is a convertible the second position is a number corresponding
to the convertible top color. See the paint
page for details. Special paint orders were handled by the Fleet &
Special Order (F&SO) office (not the COPO office). Typically a special
paint car would have a dash ( - ) character in the lower and/or upper
body color position. Norwood-built Indy Pace Car replicas used the FS&)
code of -061A. Sometimes a special paint order was shown as "0-0"
on the trim tag along with the F&SO code such as L243D.
Lines 4/5: Group option groups were listed such as the W 2M or DL 2LG 3SL 4P on the examples above. The 1967 model year was the only year the Camaro would use these group option codes.

Van Nuys began using the 4P code in September and Van Nuys (Los Angeles) in October. The 4P code was used for the RPO L30.M20 combination in late December 1966 / early January 1967 time frame.
