1968 Chevelle Alternate Interiors
BOP Alternate Interior Mystery Solved
There are a lot of theories, and even more misinformation, about why Chevrolet used Buick, Oldsmobile, and Pontiac interiors in 1968 Chevelles - including the El Camino body style. The 'mystery' has been solved. A supplier strike was the reason. The letter below, dated March 25, 1968, explains it. It should be noted that only black interiors were affected - both bench and bucket seats. These alternate interiors were used though the end of May or until current supplies were exhausted and 'normal' El Caminos were back in stock.
This matrix shows the particular ordering information for 1968 Chevelles when ordering a black interior.
The list shown here is not all-inclusive but it is to show what has been discovered for the 1968 El Camino body style for 1968. It should be noted here that only those plants that assembled the El Camino body style are listed and, where applicable, are the codes found to date. It is quite possible the same interiors would have been installed at one or more of the plants not listed for the particular series. Note no bench seat code for either a 13680 or 13880 have been discovered to date and all El Camino alternate codes are Pontiac seats.
