Examples of engine assembly plant ID stamped codes and engine VIN derivative stampings where applicable. Listings are in chronological order by date, 283/327 small block and I6 engines followed by 396 big block engines. The 396 engines are listed by plant when VIN derivative is known.

VIN derivatives were typically hand stamped at the final assembly plant and done with individual dies, the characters are seldom uniform size and nicely aligned making it difficult to determine if one you find is original or an aftermarket restamp.  These are presented as examples, you be the judge if they are correct.

Often these were done haphazardly, stamped with individual characters and sometimes the year number was omitted as in some examples shown below. The VIN derivative stamping, where applicable, used a different set of stamps than the engine plant.

Note: The engine ID pad was not painted when the engine left the assembly line although it is often painted when engines are rebuilt during the course of their lifetime. Painting can also hide the factory broach marks on the pad making it difficult to determine if the block has been decked and numbers re-stamped.

Although not mandated by federal law until the 1968 model year, higher horsepower engines like the RPO L79 327/325hp engines and 396 engines have what is called a confidential or concealed VIN (CON VIN), VIN derivative, or VIN derivative stamped next to the engine plant code. This was done at the final assembly plant and contained the model year, final assembly plant letter designation and the last six digits of the VIN sequence such as K121694 for the Kansas City, Missouri assembled Chevelle below although the year (6) seems to be missing from this example as it is in  several of the examples.

These are just a few examples. For more details and photos, order my 1967 Chevelle Reference CD.

Stamping is suspect for a couple of reasons. First this engine is found in a first week of July car and the VIN derivative includes the GM division (1) prior to the year (7). This practice typically did not start until 1968.

Note: The engine ID pad was not painted when left the assembly line although it's often painted when engines are rebuilt during the course of their lifetime. Painting can also hide the factory broach marks on the pad making it difficult to determine if the block has been decked and numbers re-stamped.

The VIN derivative (partial VIN) stamps on 1967 engines were done by hand resulting in misaligned characters.  It wasn't until 1968 that GM set standards for the VIN derivative font size.
