* Assuming standard Monday through Friday work days and excluding Thanksgiving and Christmas day.

The calculation is pretty straight forward.  Subtract the ending reported VIN from the starting VIN for a given month and divide that by the number of work days for that month and round any remainder down.

Disclaimer: The monthly production totals are those reported by GM. It is known in some years, some plants had shorter production runs in their first month and last month and may also have produced more Chevelles overall than reported. However, the above figures are based on what is published and generally accepted numbers.

The figures assume a full month but with beginning and ending months this would, naturally, not be the case.

The figures calculated are NOT to be taken literally but are for general information only.

The G.M. Assembly Plant in Oshawa, ON. built Chevelles (1) For Sale in Canada, (2) For Sale in the U.S., and (3) 'Imported' Chevelles from the U.S. Certain models such as station wagons and El Caminos were imported from the U.S. as well as SS 396 Chevelles with the L78 engine and SS 454 Chevelles with the LS6 engine. For example, Canada 'imported' 231 Malibu sport coupes with 137 of those being Z15 Malibu sport coupes (1). Most L78/LS6 Chevelles sold in Canada were built in Baltimore with several built in Kansas City; 350 Malibu convertibles were imported into Canada but, to date, the number of L78/LS6 options is not known.

(1) According to a Vintage Vehicle Services (VVS) document dated September 19, 1995. Later VVS with LS6 engine optioned Malibu sport coupes with LS6 engines do not indicate the number of Z15 optioned Malibus sport coupes. But, since Malibu sport coupes with the LS5 engine are known to have been built in Canada (299 documented by VVS reports), one can assume the 137 Z15s imported were LS6-optioned Malibu sport coupes. I currently have 17 VVS documents for LS6-optioned Malibu sport coupes; nine built at Baltimore and seven built at Kansas City (one unknown). Correspondence from VVS as of today (September 18, 2025), "While 231 Malibu Sport Coupes were imported into Canada, and all LS6 cars were imported, there is no specific record of how many of these were equipped with which powertrain." According to the limited number of VVS documents I have, so far, NO docs showing LS5s imported from the U.S. and all imported Z15 optioned Chevelles are the LS6 (with 231 13637 styles).

Just talking 13637 Malibu Sport Coupes here:

Number Produced for U.S. Sale In Canada: 25,938 of which 299 were LS5 and 3,306 were L34.
Number Produced for Sale In Canada: 10,175 of which 137 with LS5 and 700 with L34.
Member Imported for Sale In Canada: 231 of which 137 were Z15 (and of the 17 I have, all are LS6), no data on L34 or L78 optioned.

Another oddity is the Kansas City Plant supplied LS6 Malibu sport coupes to Canada up to at least January 9, 1970 as I have no later dates for those from Kansas City, and the earliest Baltimore supplied LS6 sport coupe is February 12, 1970.

* Caveats and Disclaimers:

The numbers shown are reported last VINs from each plant per month. The numbers above those in red are instances of matching VIN and Fisher Body plates to show VINs/body dates outside the published numbers. The Fisher Body Number plate build week not match the calendar week; meaning an example body date of 04A may not be the first physical or even calendar week of April. Productions are scheduled well in advance of actual build date and given it takes 3 to 4 days to physically build the car once it is scheduled, you can see where the body date will not always match up with the VIN sequence. Obviously the body plates, and the associated information, are stamped when the cars are scheduled, not as they roll by a particular station. Cars with 04A body dates may run into week 04B of production. GM wouldn't just toss out the existing body number plates with 04A just because the car didn't physically get completed until the following week.

In reality, don't place too much emphasis on the body date as opposed to the last reported VIN for a given month. The anomalies shown are shown for that very reason. It does happen and that should not be a basis for worry that your car may have had the body plate (trim tag) and/or VIN altered.

I would be very concerned of the engine assembly date vs. data in the VIN and body date issue. An engine with an assembly date after the Chevelle was assigned a sequence number would not be possible. The same holds true for any major driveline component. The Chevelle could not be built with, say, an engine with a build date of March in a February dated Chevelle.

If you have trim tags/VINs plates with dates and sequence numbers that don't fall into the range of those shown below, please email me the trim tag and sequence number and I'll post the oddity. Email it to me via my contact page.
