  Kansas City Van Nuys Oshawa

(1) It's known that at least Kansas City was building Chevelles in August of 1969 - as early as August 12 it is calculated by the date on one August 28 build sheet and the Kansas City plant was building convertibles until the end of the 1969 calendar year.

* Although there are 1970 Chevelles with body dates in August 1969, August and September totals are listed in September only. One such documented August car is from Flint with a body assembly date of 8C and sequence number of 102249 and another is a Van Nuys-built Monte Carlo with a body assembly date of 8B.

** Neither Arlington, Atlanta, nor Kansas City built Monte Carlos in 1970, only Baltimore, Flint, and Van Nuys.

*** It is suspected that Arlington, Atlanta, and Flint did not build convertibles and possibly neither Atlanta nor Flint built any station wagons in 1970; it is known that Arlington did build station wagons.

**** Figures are from reported GM numbers first published in The Chevelle Report years ago but from sequence numbers I have for fairly late September 1969, a September 24 Chevelle from Atlanta is 101040 so the figure of 100590 can't even be close to correct. I also have numerous warranty card impressions from Flint with an August build date with VINs in the 100xxx-107xxx range.

As suspected, 1970 would present a unique set of challenges. The Monte Carlo production is included in the VIN sequence and production total negating any way of separating out the Chevelle VIN sequencing vs. Monte Carlo VIN sequencing.

(1) Chevrolet's published figure for the 1970 model year is 633,945 units and include Monte Carlo production (although MC production is put at 145,975 or 145,976 units [depending on the source]) so there does not appear to be an accurate way to know what the last Chevelle VIN would be for any given plant/month. This is still 26,067 units less reported than plant figures above indicate. A reported 3,527 Chevelles were built in Caracas, Venezuela. Whether these units are included in Chevrolet's report is unknown. Canadian Classic Chevelles & Beaumonts puts Canadian production totals at 71,980.

(2) This figure does include Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Please visit Canadian Classic Chevelles for more information on Canada production.

(3) There are known Chevelles with VIN number higher than end of the month reported VIN.
(3b1) This Baltimore Chevelle has sequence #1579xx and a build sheet date of 02-24.
(3k1) This Kansas City Chevelle has sequence #1473xx and a trim tag date of 12E.
(3k2) This Kansas City Chevelle has sequence #2045xx and a trim tag date of 05D.
(3v1) This Van Nuys Chevelle has sequence #1595xx and a trim tag date of 12C.

The Monte Carlo and Chevelle were built on the same assembly lines at Baltimore, Flint, and Los Angeles (Van Nuys) and sequencing numbers would be the same range. This means that if the Monte Carlo shown with the inspector was sequence number 123456, the Chevelle next in line would be sequence number 123457.

Caveats and Disclaimers:

The numbers shown are reported last VINs from each plant per month. The numbers above those in red are instances of matching VIN and Fisher Body plates to show VINs/body dates outside the published numbers. The Fisher Body Number plate build week not match the calendar week; meaning an example body date of 04A may not be the first physical or even calendar week of April. Productions are scheduled well in advance of actual build date and given it takes 3 to 4 days to physically build the car once it is scheduled, you can see where the body date will not always match up with the VIN sequence. Obviously the body plates, and the associated information, are stamped when the cars are scheduled, not as they roll by a particular station. Cars with 04A body dates may run into week 04B of production. GM wouldn't just toss out the existing body number plates with 04A just because the car didn't physically get completed until the following week.

In reality, don't place too much emphasis on the body date as opposed to the last reported VIN for a given month. The anomalies shown are shown for that very reason. It does happen and that should not be a basis for worry that your car may have had the body plate (trim tag) and/or VIN altered.

If you have trim tags/VINs plates with dates and sequence numbers that don't fall into the range of those shown below, please email me the trim tag and sequence number and I'll post the oddity. Email it to me via my contact page.
