Manual Three-Speed Transmission - (Group 4.000)

The manual three-speed transmission was standard fare for most of the Chevelle lineup from 1964 thru 1972. Some exceptions include the 1970 with either the SS 396 or SS 454, the 1971 and 1972 SS with the 454 engine where the H.D. Muncie 4-speed or TH400 were the only transmission options available.

Like the Powerglide two-speed automatic, the three-speed manual transmissions cam in many flavors depending on the engine it was installed with. The H.D. Muncie three-speed manual transmission was the base transmission for the 1966 through 1968 SS 396 series and the SS 396 option in 1969 while the Saginaw three-speed transmission was the base transmission in 6-cylidner and small-block V8 Chevelles.

To see just what three-speed manual transmissions were used behind which specific 6- and 8-cylinder engines, see my Chevelle Facts Guide CD.
