Powerglide™ Automatic Transmission - RPO M35 (Group 4.003)

The Powerglide is a two-speed automatic transmission designed by GM and first used in 1950 Chevrolets and some Pontiac models that used a Chevrolet engine. Early Powerglide were cast iron cases and were changed to aluminum cases in 1962. As far as Chevelles are concerned, the Powerglide was used behind the 6-cylinder engines and V8 engines with a horsepower rating of 300hp or less and was phased out in 1973. The exception for Chevelles are the 1966 through 1968 SS 396 series cars could still order the L34 and L35 engines with a Powerglide but not the L78 engine.

To see just what Powerglide transmissions were used behind which specific 6- and 8-cylinder engines, see my Chevelle Facts Guide CD.

1964-1966 example: T0214D would be Toledo, February 14, day shift. Note there is no indication of the particular year. You would need to check the partial VIN for the model year.

Month dating by letter was done after the 1967 model year.

1967-1972 example: C7R25N would be Cleveland, 1967, October 25, night shift. In this example this Powerglide was built in October of 1966 for the 1967 model year.

Although the Powerglide 2-speed automatic transmission was ordered and reported under RPO M35 for all years it was available, there were many variations of the transmission depending on which engine it was being installed behind. For example, in 1966 and 1967 there were no fewer than 7 versions for each year.

Powerglide assembly plants include Cleveland, OH. (C), Toledo, OH. (T), and McKinnon Industries, St. Catharines, ON. (E) and they varied model years. See the matrix below.
