Starter Solenoid/Starter Bendix (Group 2.100/2.086)
The Chevrolet starter solenoid is attached to the top of the starter motor. The solenoid is an electromagnet that is actuated to engage the starter motor. As you can see from the above examples, there are two basic starter motors but the same solenoid is used on both. The starter motor on the right is referred to as a high-torque starter motor and used for higher horsepower engines. The solenoid is the same but notice the brass spacer on the right (high torque) starter motor.
All V8 engines use the same starter switch, more commonly known as the starter solenoid, whether you have a low torque or high torque starter motor. Most aftermarket starter switches come with the high torque copper spacer for use with a high torque starter motor. Since this a low torque starter motor, the spacer is not used. The same starter solenoid is used on all Chevrolet engines. The GM replacement number for a starter solenoid is AC Delco unit #1114458 or D981.
The starter drive assembly, also called a "Bendix"(1) is activated with power is supplied to the solenoid and engages the flywheel/flexplate to start the engine. This system was first used on the 1914 Chevrolet Series H and was used up through the 1970s. GM service replacement AC Delco #D2052.
(1) The Bendix is named after the mechanism's inventor, Vincent Hugo Bendix. The same man bought patents from a French inventor for brake shoe and brake drum design to start the Bendix Brake Company.
