Frame Interchanges - Ref: Hollander's Interchange Manual
Several third-party vendors were used for Chevelle frames, A.O. Smith, Parish, and Hayes are known suppliers. An A. O. Smith frame can be identified by the letter "S" in a circle along with the frame chart part number and date stamped on the side of the frame rail. A Parish frame on early Chevelles looks to the casual observer as if the frame has been repaired and welded but this is normal for a Parish frame.

Partial VIN Stamp
A partial VIN (a.k.a., concealed VIN, VIN derisive, etc.) was typically stamped on the top rail of the frame. These were hidden from the general public for years and only the state's Highway Patrol or vehicle inspection stations knew of their existence. This was done, as was the partial VIN stamp on engine blocks and transmission cases, to identify theft vehicles. As enthusiast began restoring their cars and removing the body from the frame, these partial VIN stamps were found. Typically the stamp can be found on the top of the frame rail on the passenger side just aft of the rear wheel.
Typical partial VIN (a.k.a. CON VIN or VIN derivative) located on
the driver side rear on top of the rail and very difficult to read
except with a mirror. Generally, the manufacturer's ID and date code
are on the outside of the rail and is visible. Like the partial VIN
stamp on engine blocks and transmission cases, the partial VIN will
consist of the division (depending on the year), the model year, the
final assembly plant and the six digits of the sequence number. For
example, a typical partial VIN might read 19K345678 for a Chevrolet
(1), 1969 (9), Kansas City assembly plant, and vehicle sequence
345678.
Other locations for the partial VIN stamping on frames reported are ...
It's been reported that partial VIN stampings on 1970 Chevelle frames from KC are few and far between.
(1) driver side below door on top of frame on both 1964 and 1965 Chevelles; 1969 Fremont El Camino; 1966 & 1968 Fremont El Camino (as well as 'typical' location). One 1964 Van Nuys owner reports the entire VIN (45837Lxxxxxx was found here).
(2) passenger side front inside of frame rail on 1970 El Camino.
(3) passenger side rear frame rail, both top and outside - 1970 Atlanta & 1970 Baltimore.
