Oil Pan Removal

It is often asked if it is possible to remove the engine oil pan without pulling the engine. It really depends on the particular engine and the year and make of the car.

The procedures presented here are from an old Chilton's Auto Manual.

Inline Engines - 6 cylinder

1. Disconnect batter ground strap at battery.

2. Drain oil from engine.

3. Disconnect all wires from starter. Remove starter.

4. Disconnect steering idler arm bracket at right hand frame rail. Swing linkage down for pan clearance.

5. Remove front crossmember. On station wagon, let stabilizer bar hang while removing crossmember.

6. Remove oil pan bolts, drop the pan and clean off gaskets and end seals.
