Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How can I find my Chevelle that was sold in 19xx or was one owned by a family member?
A: Unfortunately many states will not do a vehicle search even if
you have the vehicle's identification number (VIN) due to many
reasons.
** First is privacy laws. While your search may be
genuine, the same search can turn up your name/address by someone
seeing your car at a car show or a Wal-Mart parking lot. They get
your car's VIN, ask the state to run an owner check, and by Saturday
your car is stolen.
** Second is the simple matter of logistics.
Typically a state will only have owner records based on current (and
maybe even delinquent) registration. When the car is sold that state
may or may not have a record of the sale (making it delinquent to
them) and after an X-number of non-registration will be purged from
that state's records.
Naturally, law enforcement has access
to a vehicle by its VIN; just how far back they can search isn't
known to this writer. However, it's this writers understanding that
this can only be done in an official capacity and cannot be used for
casual checks for individuals to find out who owns their car now.
Q: Will my state search for previous owners?
A: Some historical information may be obtained from your state's Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) if they offer the service. Those states that do offer previous owner information generally will only have information of the time the Chevelle was registered in that state.
Some states will not provide any previous owner history at all due to privacy concerns. Every state is different and I do not know the particulars for any given state.
Q: How much does it cost to list my car?
A: Your submission will be shown for 1 calendar year at no cost. If you wish to continue to have it shown after that you have the option of keeping it here for $25 per year. I accept PayPal and will send an invoice.
