Malibu SS/SS 396-Specific Colors & Special Paint
Both the 1964 and 1965 Malibu SS series offered specific colors that were not typically available on other series of the years. Goldwood Yellow was reserved for the 1964 Malibu SS while Evening Orchid, Glacier Gray, and Crocus Yellow was reserved for the 1965 Malibu SS.
The 1969 model year for the Chevelle lineup saw the SS 396 go from its own series to an option. The SS 396 option (RPO Z25) could be ordered on any one of four different body styles (coupe, sport coupe, convertible, or El Camino) and either one of two series (300 Deluxe and Malibu). Hugger Orange and Daytona Yellow were reserved for the 1969 SS 396.
Special Paint Colors
Special paint was always an option under RPO ZP3 and could be ordered via GM's Fleet & Special Order (F&SO) process. For an additional cost, virtually any color GM had access to could be ordered. The cost could range from no cost to over $125 depending on the number of vehicles to be painted. The Cadillac Firemist colors were not normally available via the F&SO process since the metallic content of the paint required a special paint gun.
The F&SO process was typically used for fleet orders such as city/state/federal commercial vehicles. Several other items were included in the F&SO process such as 1967 Norwood-built Camaro Pace Car replicas, deletion of standard stripes (such as the ZL2 option on 1970-1972 Chevelles). The Malibu SS-specific colors for 1964 and 1965 could be ordered on any 1964/1965 Chevelle through the F&SO process just as any 1969 Chevelle could be ordered with Hugger Orange or Daytona Yellow.
Special Paint on Trim Tags
Different plants and different years show special paint in a variety of ways. The paint code section of the trim tag could be blank, have a dash (hyphen) character. Plants could also show the 'correct' paint code on a Chevelle for any other Chevrolet paint code such as code "51" (an Oldsmobile code for Sebring Yellow) or "47" (a Corvette paint code for Elkhart Green).
