Due to federal regulations mandating unleaded fuel, the compression ratio was lowered to a maximum of 9.0:1 which, not only affected actual horsepower, but GM began rating engines in SAE NET horsepower to reflect a more accurate true horsepower rating.
The 1971 model year got new, high-back bucket seats. The "Camaro by Chevrolet" trunk emblem was replaced with a simply "Camaro" emblem. Side marker lamps now flashed with turn signals, all 1971 Camaros got the corporate 8.5" 10-bolt rear end, international symbols replaced words on the dash knobs, and this would be the last year for Van Nuys Camaro production.
