The 1970 Camaro was a completely redesigned car from Chevrolet. Due to sheet metal issues, the 1970 model year was late getting into production due to issues with the stamping of the quarter panels and is often referred to as a 1970½ Camaro. The 1969 model year Camaro was extended through November with an additional 42,803 1969s being built during this time. During the first quarter of 1970 dealers were selling 1969 and 1970 Camaros at the same time. The 1970 Camaro was finally introduced on February 25, 1970.

A number of appearance and performance options were available along with standard and custom interior designs. Fifteen exterior colors and five interior colors were available with a Custom Interior Group option that included wood-grained accents on the instrument panel and steering wheel.

Either a 250cid 6-cylinder engine or a 307cid 8-cylinder engine was standard with the 1970 Camaro. Three optional Turbo-Fire 350 engines (two were only available with the SS or Z28 option) and two Turbo-Jet 396 (actually 402cid for 1970) engines. The optional Turbo-Jet 350 was rated at 300 hp under RPO L65. One of the Turbo-Fire 350 engines rated at 300hp was only available with the Super Sport option RPO Z27; the second Turbo-Fire 350cid engine was rated at 360hp and was part of with the Special Engine option RPO Z28. The two '396' Turbo-Jet engines were rated at 350hp for the RPO L34 engine and 375hp for the RPO L78 engine. Although two Turbo-Jet 454 engines are shown in the AMA Specifications chart, none were ever offered in the Camaro.

The Rally Sport Package option under RPO Z22 came with a front 'split bumper' arrangement and different park/turn lamps. See the Rally Sport page for more.

The Super Sport option under RPO Z27 came with the Turbo-Fire 350 rated at 300hp. See the Super Sport page for more.

The Special Performance option under RPO Z28 (as it is better known) came with the Turbo-Fire 350 rated at 360hp. See the Special Performance page for more.

The 1970 Camaro was only available in a sport coupe body style.
