Typical 1968 Fisher Body plate breakdown
Do not confuse the Fisher Body unit number plate information with that found on the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) plate. The series depiction on the Fisher Body unit number plate does NOT have the same meaning as the VIN plate. The "12" is the Camaro model code, "4" is a fixed number for 1968 and has no meaning, and "37" is the body style code. The 12437 style breaks down to Camaro (12), no meaning (4) and coupe body style (37). The 1968 and 1969 model years the third digit was fixed to "4" and had no meaning.
Los Angeles and Norwood have different information on their plates. Please check the individual assembly plant for specifics.
Line 1: Production date of vehicle. A typical production date is 06D
This production date of 06D decodes to June (06) in the fourth
week (D).
Unfortunately, nobody can define what dates are associated with a
week letter.
01 - January | 07 - July |
02 - February | 08 - August |
03 - March | 09 - September |

LOS ANGELES PRODUCTON DAY
Los Angeles stamped the production day and that day's sequence in the upper right corner; T576 ~ Production day (T), sequence number for that day (576) where "T" is the 20th work day of the month and "576" is the 576th Camaro scheduled for that day and would be reset to 001 if needed.
Line 2: The first two-digit number on line two is the year of production followed by body style, assembly plant, and the Fisher Body unit number used for production purposes.
SERIES/MODEL IDENTIFICATION (only body style is distinguished)
12437 CAMARO COUPE
12467 CAMARO CONVERTIBLE
Line 3: Interior trim and lower/upper paint codes.
PLANT DESIGNATION
NOR for Norwood or LOS for Los Angeles.
FISHER BODY NUMBER
Each Fisher Body plant would sequence the body number as
scheduled and not by order of final assembly. Los Angeles body
numbers were generally sequenced by style number, 12437 and
12467. Highest known body numbers for each style are:
12437 - 47,462
12467 - 1,646
The total of body numbers (49,108) is less than the total Camaros
built at Los Angeles (49,164) leaving one to surmise there may still
be some body numbers out there that have not yet been identified.
INTERIOR TRIM
Bench or bucket seat color and a letter to designate whether headrests were ordered. See the interior page for details.
PAINT COLOR
The paint code for lower and upper body colors are noted here with two letters, or one letter and one number. If a coupe was fitted with a vinyl top the second position is a number corresponding to the vinyl top color; likewise if the car is a convertible the second position is a number corresponding to the convertible top color. See the paint page for details. Special paint orders were handled by the Fleet & Special Order (F&SO) office (not the COPO office). Typically a special paint car would have a dash ( - ) character in the lower and/or upper body color position.
