In most cases the RPO D88 stripe color was determined by the upper body color or vinyl top/convertible color as applicable. Two exceptions are Classic White and Tuxedo Black for obvious reasons. Other colors such as Shadow Gray, Fathom Blue, Forest Green, and Black Cherry were limited to either black or white stripes regardless of the upper body color. The D88 stripes were an option on ANY Malibu sport coupe, convertible, or El Camino whether it was ordered with one of the two SS options or not. When the ZL2 Special Ducted Hood Air System was ordered with either of the SS options, stripes (and hood pins) were part of that option. If the buyer did not want the stripes they could be deleted by the F&SO process.

Note the Fleet & Special Order (F&SO) on this SS454 with ZL2 Special Ducted Hood Air System and stripe delete. Also note this is a special paint Chevelle with RPO ZP3 and no color shown in box #24.

One could, through the Fleet & Special Order (F&SO) process, request the alternative color stripes on Shadow Gray, Fathom Blue, Forrest Green, or Black Cherry colored Malibus. Several Arlington and Kansas City Chevelles were done with 'square  stripes' for some reason. There had to be some sort of communication between Fisher Body and Chevrolet since Fisher Body built the car from the firewall back and would be moved to the Chevrolet assembly side of the plant where the chassis and front sheet metal were assembled so Chevrolet had to know to use square stripes on the hood. To date, no known survivor has been documented with square stripes on the trunk lid and round stripes on the hood. See the SS page for examples.

Any Malibu sport coupe, convertible, or sedan pickup could order RPO D88 stripes. RPO D88 stripes were NOT part of either the SS 396 or SS454 option package. They were part of the RPO ZL2 Special Ducted Hood Air System along with hood pins for 1970. You often hear the term "stripe delete" referring to an SS 396 or SS454 without stripes, this is incorrect in most instances. The stripes could ONLY be "deleted" when the ZL2 option was ordered and that had to be done, again, through the F&SO process. If one did not order the D88 stripes without the ZL2 hood, they could not be "deleted" if they were not ordered.
