1971 Malibu RPO D88 Stripe Color

In most cases the RPO D88 stripe color was determined by the upper body color or vinyl top/convertible color as applicable. Two exceptions are Antique White and Tuxedo Black for obvious reasons.

 

One could, through the Fleet & Special Order (F&SO) process request the alternative color stripes on any color Malibus with the exception noted above.

 

Any Malibu sport coupe, convertible, or sedan pickup could order RPO D88 stripes. RPO D88 stripes were NOT part of the Malibu SS option package. They were part of the RPO ZL2 Special Ducted Hood Air System along with hood pins for 1970. You often hear the term "stripe delete" referring to a Malibu SS without stripes, this is incorrect in most instances. The stripes could ONLY be "deleted" when the ZL2 option was ordered and that had to be done, again, through the F&SO process. If one did not order the D88 stripes without the ZL2 hood, they could not be "deleted" if they were not ordered.
