Chevelle Vehicle Identification Number Decode

Note: This has be successfully used with Google Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer up to and including IE8; it appears there is something in IE10/IE11 that prevents this decoder from working.

It should be noted that currently 1965 and 1966 Canadian Chevelle VINs are NOT supported at this time due to their unique format. I suggest you see the VIN breakdown pages for 1965 and 1966 individually for Canadian Chevelle VINs.

The 1967 Canadian Chevelles also had some unique series/models the U.S. did not have and, at least from one source, the 300 Deluxe series, El Camino, and Concours station wagons were not made in Canada; I suggest you look at the VIN breakdown for Canada on the 1967 VIN page for more information.

ENTER VIN:

Year:
Series:
Body Style:
Plant:
Chevelle (All Models - Sequence) #:

It should also be noted there are some other combinations of plants and body styles that are error-trapped in the VIN decoder code. The following are known but there are a couple of other body styles/years that are suspect. What this means is you could type in what appears to be a perfectly valid VIN such as 136679A300001 and get a correctly decoded result of a 1969 Malibu 2-door convertible from Atlanta even though no convertibles were ever built at the Atlanta plant with the following exceptions. There were 1964/1965 Convertibles and El Caminos assembled at Atlanta but the bodies were built at the Euclid, OH. Fisher Body plant and shipped to Atlanta for final assembly.

(1) Atlanta and Framingham built limited body styles.
(2) El Caminos were only built at Fremont, Baltimore, Los Angeles (1964 only), and Kansas City.
(3) No convertibles were built at Kansas City in 1970 after December 1969 but would resume for 1971 and 1972.

It is suspected that Arlington, Atlanta, and Flint did not build convertibles and possibly neither Atlanta nor Flint built any station wagons in 1970; it is known that Arlington did build station wagons in 1970 though.

If you receive an error you do not understand or feel the error is incorrect, contact me via the contact page. Be sure to specify EXACTLY what you typed for the VIN and what the error message says.

Special thanks to Robert McIntosh for his efforts in the coding of this program.

As noted above the Oshawa plant for 1965 and 1966 continued to put the model year as the first digit in their 'Chassis Number' as they called it.

© ChevelleWorld

Example:
First Character: Model Year (5) [or '6' for 1966], Second, Third and Fourth Characters: Division/Series Designation - Chevrolet, L6 Malibu (135) Fifth and Sixth Characters: Body Style/Model - 4-door sedan (69) Seventh through Twelfth Digits: Sequential Production Number beginning with 000001 (050001).

A couple of series & body styles were offered in Canada that were not available in the U.S. There was a 131/13267 Chevelle 300 convertible and 131/13235 station wagon. The Malibu SS sports option (RPO A51) was discontinued early in 1967 with the availability of the SS396 series. Those noted by an asterisk (*) were imported into Canada from a U.S. assembly plant. These typically included station wagons and sedan pickups, or Pick-Up Delivery as they are noted in the table below. One model that was built at the Oshawa plant that is unique to them are the 131/13267 300 series convertibles.

It should be noted that the GM of Canada Oshawa assembly plant also imported series/models they produced along with certain engines such as the RPO LS6 engine in 1970 and 1969 COPO Chevelles. GM of Canada also 'exported' some Chevelles to the U.S. as well as Europe and other outside the U.S. destinations.
