Writing A Gear Ratio

It never ceases to amaze me that people, even smart car people, write a rear gear ratio with a colon ( : ) such as 3:73, 3:31, or 4:10 instead of a period ( . ). As incorrectly written, the ratios would be 3 to 73, 3 to 31 and 4 to 10. These should be written as 3.73, 3.31 or 4.10 - or more correctly as 3.73:1, 3.31:1, or 4.10:1 meaning 3.73 to 1, 3.31 to 1 and 4.10 to 1.

It takes more effort to type a colon than it does a period. Now, on a smart phone or tablet both characters are on the same screen so one doesn't have to use the SHIFT key as they would on a PC/Mac keyboard - I can understand that. But still, not knowing - or caring - to correctly write a ratio when it's taught in the sixth grade!

So, agree or disagree, that's how I see it.
