RPO L78 Production Figures for the Chevelle.

The L78 engine option was available in any 1966 SS396 and optional in the 13680 Malibu series El Camino. The same is true for the 1967 model year and for the 1968 model year the El Camino was included in the SS396 series so the L78 was not available in the 13680 Malibu series El Camino.

The L78 engine option was available as an optional engine along with the RPO Z25 SS Equipment option in both 1969 and 1970 and was only available with the RPO Z25 SS Equipment option in those two years.

The L78 engine option was removed from the engine option availability in late 1969 for the 1970 model year when it was replaced with the Z15 SS 454 Equipment option. Those L78 engine orders that were already in the pipeline were allowed to be continued but no new orders would be accepted.

The number of L78 service engines for the 1969 model year are not known. In 1969 the COPO Chevelles show L78 engines on order forms and build sheets but these engines were replaced with the RPO L72 427 cid engine. The Tonawanda engine plant records show only 8,876 L78 engines built but GM's sales reports indicate 9,486 sold. It is assumed the GM records show the count (9,486) from sales records and not from actual production numbers that got to the public.

The number of L78 service engines for Chevelles for the 1970 model year are not known as the Tonawanda engine plant records are for L78 engines built for the A body Chevelle, the F body Camaro, and the X body Nova.

An aluminum head option (RPO L89) was available in 1969 and 1970. In 1969 412 L89 optioned L78s were built; 400 were sold and 12 were service engines. In 1970 it's known from the Tonawanda engine plant records that 28 Chevelle L78 engines were built; 18 were sold and 10 were service engines. The L89 production numbers are not over and above the L78 engine numbers but are part of those numbers. For example the 2,144 L78 engines sold in 1970 includes the 18 L89 optioned L78 engines.

Bowties do ot show the L89 aluminum head option in 1969, GM's documentation does mention 311.
