RPO L79 Production Figures for the Chevelle.

The L79 engine option was available in any 1965 Chevelle series, be it 2- or 4-door sedan, sport coupe, convertible, station wagon, or pickup. There are no known breakdowns of what series was ordered with any specific quantity of L79 engine options.

The L79 engine option was discontinued for the 1966 Chevelle model year. It is suspected the reason is Chevrolet did not want a 350hp 327 engine competing with the new SS396 series Chevelles with 325hp, 360hp, and 375hp 396 cid engines.

The L79 engine option returned for the 1967 Chevelle model year but the horsepower rating was reduced from 350hp to 325hp, presumably so it might only compete with the base 325hp 396 cid SS396 engine. Like the 1965 model year the L79 engine could be ordered in any body style or series except the SS396 sport coupe or SS396 convertible.

The 1968 model year would be the final year for the L79 engine option for any Chevrolet. The L79 could be ordered in any series or body style except the SS396 sport coupe, SS396 convertible, or SS396 sedan pickup.

RPO L79 Production Figures for the Chevy II/Nova/Acadian Beaumont.

As noted above, the L79 engine option was discontinued for the 1966 Chevelle model year. It is suspected the reason is Chevrolet did not want a 350hp 327 engine competing with the new SS396 series Chevelles with 325hp, 360hp, and 375hp 396 cid engines.

The L79 engine option was available in the 1965/1966 Acadian Beaumont/Canso sport coupe and convertible and the 1966/1968 Chevy II/Nova. Only 23 1965 Acadian Beaumonts/Cansos were ordered with the L79 engine option in both the 573837 sport coupe and 573867 convertible with no known breakdown of engine vs. body style.
