RPO LS5/LS6Product ion Figures for the Chevelle.

The LS5 engine was the base 454 cid engine for the 1970 SS454 Equipment (RPO Z15) and was not an 'option' as such in 1970. In 1971 and 1972 the Z15 SS Equipment option was relegated to more of an dress-up option than a true performance option. In 1971 and 1972 any 350 engine along with the 402 cid LS3 engine as well as the LS5 454 cid engine could be ordered with the Z15 SS Equipment option. It should be noted that in 1971 and 1972 the two 350 cid engines and the LS3 engine could be ordered in any Chevelle series without the Z15 option. Only the 454 cid LS5 engine required the Z15 SS Equipment option. The LS6 engine was only available in Chevelles in 1970 although some pre-production 1971 Chevelles were built with the LS6 engine, none were ever reported as sold to the public.

In 1970 the LS5 engine was the base engine for the RPO Z15 SS 454 Equipment option. While sales numbers are not shown by GM, one can calculate the number of LS5 Chevelles by subtracting the number of LS6 engine options (4,475) from the total RPO Z15 SS 454 Equipment option number (8,773).

* The MSRP of the SS454 Equipment option that included the LS5 engine. Quantity does not include the 3,823 LS5 engines included in the RPO Z20 Monte Carlo SS option.

** The Cost of the LS6 was in addition to the $503.45 cost of the RPO Z15 SS454 Equipment option.

*** LS5 production numbers seem to be all over the spectrum depending on whose numbers you read:
>> Chevrolet Accumulative Production through August 31, 1971 shows 9,502 LS5 engines for Chevelle, 6,831 for full-size Chevrolets, and 5,097 for Corvettes.
>> Tonawanda Engine Plant production shows 3,035 LS5 w/M22 and 12,234 "A" and "B" body with M40. If one subtracts the 6,831 full-size Chevrolets from this 12,234 number it leaves 5,403 LS5/M40 for Chevelles. If one then adds the 5,403 LS5/M40 to 3,035 LS5/M22 you only get 8,438 LS5 for Chevelles - 1,064 LS5 engines unaccounted for. Whether "Chevelle" includes the Monte Carlo or not isn't known but 1,919 Monte Carlo SS options were sold in 1971 and the Monte Carlo SS included the LS5/M40 combination. Bottom line - some numbers just do not add up.

**** An additional 8,034 are listed for 1972 Full-Size Passenger Chevrolets and 3,913 for 1972 Corvettes.
