The 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray introduced the 427 cubic-inch engine. 1966 Corvettes with these engines also came with a special bubble hood to accommodate the 427 cubic-inch engines. Both of the 427 cubic-inch engines were originally marketed as bigger horsepower engines. The 425 horsepower version was originally specified at 450 horsepower and the 390 horsepower version was originally rated at 400 horsepower. No changes to the actual engines was made but the literature and badging was changed to the lower horsepower ratings.
The side vents on the coupe disappeared this year. Backup lights were now a standard item and were incorporated into the existing tail lights. Holley carburetors which were on some optional engines before are now standard on all engines. Seats were updated to decrease wear and tear. The knock-off cast aluminum wheels were still available although the center cap now had a dull finish.
Early big-block Corvette (around October and #288) hood hinge is on the passenger
side of the car.
Late
big-block Corvette hood hinge is on the driver side.
A radio was optional. When no radio was ordered the panel was left blank.
Headrests were optional for the first time and the interior door pulls are bright metal. The headliner of the 1966 Corvette is foam and vinyl, an upgrade from the fiberboard headliner previously used. All 1965-1967 396/427 rocker arm covers were painted orange except for the 16 L89s in 1967. The finned Corvette rocker arm covers had a flaw in the casting in mid-1966 resulting in a parting line through the letter "o" in Corvette. The same flaw continued into the early 1967 model year.
