Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many Heavy Chevys were built:
A: In 1971 there were
6,727 YF3 options sold, in 1972 that number jumped to 9,508
YF3-optioned base Chevelles.
Q: Were any Malibus ordered as Heavy Chevys?
A: No, the YF3
Heavy Chevy option was only available on a base Chevelle sport coupe
(13437/C37) body style
Q: How many 1972 Heavy Chevy's were ordered with a 4-speed?
A:
There are no known records at this time on how many of any option
was ordered in combination with other options or body styles. For
example, in 1972 there were 10,201 M20 transmissions sold but just
how many went to any particular series or ordered with a specific
engine or any other option.
Q: What engines could be ordered with the Heavy Chevy?
A; Any
engine except the LS5 454 engine could be ordered. This included the
base V8 (307) both 350 engines (L48 and L65) as well as the LS3 402.
Q: How do I know if my Chevelle is a Heavy Chevy?
A: First, it
has to be a 13437 or 1C37 Chevelle sport coupe. Second, it's easy to
put decals on any 13437/1C37 Chevelle or add a domed hood so some sort of documentation
such as a build sheet showing the YF3 option or dealer invoice
showing the option.
This happens to be a 1971 YF3 optioned Chevelle with a 307 engine
and TH350 transmission.
Here's a 1972 YF3 optioned Chevelle with the L48 350-4 and TH350
transmission. Note in both instances there is an RPO code BW1
to delete rear ornamentation which is also unique to YF3 optioned
Chevelles.
Q: Could I get gauges like the Malibu?
A: Certainly. The SS optioned Malibus came standard with the round gauge pods for
fuel and speedometer where the Chevelle came with the same sweep
dash as non-SS optioned Malibus. The RPO U14 Instrument Panel
gauges were available in both the Chevelle sport coupe (13437) and Malibu series
sport coupe, convertible, or Custom El Caminos (136jxx)
so, yes you could get the same round gauge pod dash in the Chevelle
as in the Malibu by checking off RPO U14.
Q: Will a matching numbers engine verify a Heavy Chevy?
A: No.
Any V8 except the 454 was available in a base Chevelle
sport coupe, YF3 optioned or not, so a matching numbers engine would tell you nothing
about it being a factory optioned Heavy Chevy.
