The instrument panel is completely new and features a full-width recess, housing instrument cluster and radio. Bright control knobs, ignition switch, and cigarette lighter are located in the slender panel above the recess. The ignition switch now incorporates a push-turn feature to prevent accidentally turning to the accessory position. An instrument panel pad is now standard for all 1966 Chevelle models.
The instrument cluster is black for all models and groups all instruments and warning lamps. Chevelles equipped with a Powerglide transmission and column mounted shift include the shift quadrant as part of the instrument cluster. Distinctive trim for the Super Sport and Malibu instrument panel includes a black plastic right side trim plate with either a Super Sport or Malibu emblem as dictated by the series. A black crinkle finished strip decorates the narrow area at the top of the instrument panel on the Super Sport and Malibu series. The 300 Deluxe series has a bright strip molding along the lower edge of the panel. See Interior > Instrument Panel for more information.
A special instrumentation package is available for the Super Sport 396 series and the Sport Coupe and Convertible models of the Malibu series. This instrumentation includes fuel gauge and ammeter in the left gauge pod and oil pressure & water temperature in the right gauge pod. A tachometer with appropriate red line settings is included with the special instrumentation option and is also available separately for V-8 engine equipped models. The steering wheel is completely new for the 300 Deluxe, Malibu, and Super Sport 396 models and includes a bright trim ring to activate the horn as well a center horn button. Four bright trim rings on the wheel rim are special to the Malibu and Super Sport 396. The Chevelle 300 series retains the previous steering wheel and horn button. An optional center console with floor shift, clock, and storage compartment is available for Super Sport 396 and Malibu Sport Coupes and Convertibles when bucket seats and Powerglide or 4-speed manual transmission are ordered. When the Super Sport 396 is ordered with no optional transmission, a 3-speed floor shift with console is also available.
Optional "Strato-bucket" front seats are available for the Super Sport 396 and Malibu Sport Coupes and Convertibles and is available in six colors.
An all-vinyl bench seat is offered in seven colors for the Super Sport 396 series. Floor covering for all Super Sport 396 models is deep-twist carpet.
Cloth and vinyl seat trim for the Malibu Sport Coupe and Sedan models feature diamond pattern on the cloth. The all-vinyl trim for the Station Wagon and Convertible plus the optional black vinyl trim is available for the Sport Coupe and Sport Sedan and are styled similar to the Super Sport 396. Door panel styling is also shared with the Super Sport 396. Floor covering for all Malibu models is deep-twist carpet. Four colors are available for pillar sedans and station wagon models while a choice of five colors, including the optional black vinyl trim, is available for Sport Coupe and Sport Sedan models while six interiors are available for the Convertible.
Three colors are available for the sedan cloth and vinyl 300 Deluxe while the Station Wagon is all vinyl. Seat trim for sedans had grained vinyl top, center, and door panels with seat and backrest inserts include a pattern vinyl. Vinyl coated rubber, keyed to the interior color, covers the passenger compartment.
The cloth and vinyl interior on the Chevelle 300 is available in three colors. Seats feature a pattern cloth, with solid center and side panels woven into the fabric. Seat facings and embossed door panels are vinyl. Floor covering is black rubber.
