Is My Camaro a True Super Sport?
1967
These was not a regular production code (RPO) specifically for the Super Sport (SS). The RPO L48 350cid engine rated at 295hp along with a Muncie 4-speed along with a special hood with faux hood scoops, SS badging, distinctive nose stripe, and red stripe wide oval nylon tires. The 396cid L35 325hp and L78 375hp engines was optional. The SS option can be identified by the letter "P" in the 4th option group on the Fisher Body Number Plate for the L48 (SS350), "N" for the L35, or "K" for the L78 (SS396). In addition, when either 396cid engine was ordered, the tailpan was blacked-out.
The SS350/SS396 could be ordered along with the Rally Sport (RS) option under RPO Z22. When ordered together the "SS" badging took precedence over the "RS" badging. See this page for examples.
The letter "P" in the 4th option group was also used for the RPO L30/RPO M20 combination but the M20 in this case was the Saginaw 4-speed and not the Muncie. So, you see it would be easy to 'convert' a non-SS Camaro to an SS clone using this as the only verification.
1968
Like the 1967 model year, there was no "SS" specific RPO code. Group option coded was not used after 1967 so there is nothing on a Fisher Body Number Plate to identify the SS as such. The base engine was the L48 350cid engine with all three 396cid engines now optional.

1969
Finally, the SS option had its own regular production option code RPO Z27. Production reports indicate 34,932 were ordered. The L48 350cid continued to be the base engine but now rated at 300hp with all three 396cid engines optional.
