The VIN of a 1965 Impala SS is unique to the Super Sport. The second and third digits should be "65" or "66" where "65" is for a 6-cylinder Impala SS and "66" is a V8 Impala SS.

The legendary 409 engine would be replaced by the new Mark IV 396 engine around February. Only 2,828 409 engines would be sold in 1965 compared to 55,499 396 engines. The TH400 automatic transmission made its debut in 1965. The 1965 Super Sport convertible was the most expensive (base price) Chevrolet at $3,146.00.
