1964 Malibu SS

1964 Malibu SS Interior

See trim codes page for interior colors

The 1964 Malibu SS series came standard with bucket seats and a column-shifted manual 3-speed transmission. When an optional transmission was ordered such as the 2-speed automatic Powerglide™ or 4-speed manual transmission, a console was used. A center console did not become as option per se until the 1966 model year under RPO D55.

All Malibu SS Chevelles (L6 or V8) came standard with a column shifted manual 3-speed transmission. The Malibu SS still got its standard bucket seats but no console with the standard, manual 3-speed. Even the optional RPO M10 3-speed manual with overdrive (shown here) was column shifted (note the overdrive lever to the immediate left of the steering column). Only when the optional manual 4-speed or Powerglide™ automatic transmission were ordered did the car receive the center console.

Seven basic colors were available for the Malibu SS. Of the seven, black was by far the most popular with 29,525 sold.

The embossed emblem on the backrest center bolster was the same on the Malibu but, oddly enough, only the Malibu SS was offered with a black interior.

A tachometer was optional on all V8 Chevelles in 1964 under RPO U16 and 5,734 buyers opted for it. The tachometer replaced the clock in the Malibu SS.

When the optional tachometer was ordered in the V8 Malibu SS the clock was moved to the top of the dash.

Since bucket seats were NOT an option in any other Chevelle, no center consoles would be either. One exception to this are three bucket seat trim codes for the sedan pickup; 717 - Light Fawn, 724 - Metallic Medium Aqua, and 726 - Medium Red. Bucket seats were not an option as such but rather the three trim codes were bucket seats for sedan pickups and as such would come with a center console when the optional 2-speed Powerglide automatic or 4-speed manual transmission was ordered such as this sedan pickup with the Metallic Medium Aqua interior.
