Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is meant by "numbers matching?"
A: In the real world it means the partial VIN characters on the engine and transmission match the last six digits of the car's VIN. From 1964 through 1972 the only engines that did get a partial VIN stamp were the L79 350 cid 350-hp engines and all of the 396 cid and 454 cid engines. The other 1964-1967 engines did not get a partial VIN stamp so there are no "numbers" to match.
Q: How can I tell if my Chevelle is an SS?
A: I suggest looking at the specific year of your Chevelle on this program for answers. If you still have questions, please contact me through my Contact page.
Q: My Chevelle has bucket seats but no console? What gives?
A: In both 1964 and 1965 only the Malibu SS came standard with bucket seats. A center console was not an available option in these two years but rather, when the optional manual 4-speed transmission OR the 2-speed Powerglide automatic transmission was ordered, the center console was also installed. The 13680 sedan pickup also had bucket seats available as a seat choice, not really a 'bucket seat; option and the same rule applied - order the 4-speed or Powerglide and a console was installed.
Beginning in 1966, bucket seats became an option under RPO A51 in three body styles; sport coupe, convertible, and sedan pickup. The center console, RPO D55, was its own option. Not a lot, but a few people did order bucket seats but did NOT order the center console. See the interior link for any year and you will see the number of A51 bucket seat options vs. the number of D55 center console options for that year.
