What is a 1964-1972 SS Chevelle?
|
Four Generations |
An "SS" Chevelle can be broken down into one of three categories:
>> The 1964 and
1965 Malibu SS series
>> The 1966, 1967,
and 1968 SS 396 series
>> The 1969, 1970,
1971, and
1972 SS-optioned Chevelle
General Motors needed a midsize car to fit the youth market between the compact Chevy II/Nova and their full-size Chevrolet. Chevrolet rolled out the new 1964 Chevelle in September of 1963. Oddly enough, the new 1964 Chevelle shared a lot of overall dimensions with the classic 1955 Chevrolet. Both used the essentially same small-block V8 although the 1964 Chevelle boasted 283 cubic inches vs. the 265 cubic inches of the 1955 Chevrolet along with the same 6-cylinder (with a few updates). Both share the same 115-inch wheelbase and 58-inch tread width. And, both started a new era of classic Chevrolets.
This guide will only address the 1964/1965 Malibu SS, 1966-1968 SS 396, and 1969-1972 SS-optioned Chevelles built at one of the several assembly plants in the United States; Canadian Chevelle production numbers are not included unless otherwise noted. For more technical data on all 1964-1972 Chevelles, see my Chevelle Facts Guide CD available at my ChevelleCD.net website.
It would be a very labor intensive task to explain all the nuances between non-SS and SS Chevelles, regardless of the year. This product is not meant as a complete description of every SS difference or nuance.
