1964 Malibu SS

Paint Colors

The Malibu SS could be ordered any of the standard 14 paint colors. Goldwood Yellow was reserved for the Malibu SS. However, Goldwood Yellow could be ordered by way of GM's Fleet & Special Order process as "special paint."

Depending on the assembly, the paint color code could be a 3- or 4-digit number or letters. The Fremont, CA. plant coded their trim tags with letters while all other plants coded their trim tags with a number. Fremont coded tags listed the upper body color first, then the lower body color. Fremont also often included the wheel color with a third letter. Several two-tone colors were also an option.

Sales name often differed from the plant paint name and the sales name could vary between Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, and Oldsmobile A-body cars even though the plant paint name was the same. For example, Chevrolet's "Tuxedo Black" sales name was Buick's "Regal Black." Chevrolet's "Ermine White" sales name was Oldsmobile's "Provincial White." Same colors just a different sales names.

No less than 11 two-tone color combinations were optional for $16.15. The 1964 model year was the only year the upper body color was listed then the lower body color.

Convertible tops were available in three colors, white (1), black (2), and beige (3). Vinyl tops were not available in 1964 for Chevelles.

The convertible top color was shown in different ways depending on the assembly plant.

Baltimore did not indicate the convertible top color.

Kansas City added a number to the paint code such as 9221 for an Ember Red Malibu SS convertible with a white top.

Van Nuys added a dash and number after the interior trim code such as 714-2 for a black interior Malibu SS with a black top.

The Euclid plant built convertible bodies for Atlanta and followed the same format as Van Nuys, a dash and number after the interior trim code such as 786-1 for a medium red interior and white top.

It needs to be pointed out that there is no known breakdown of color and specific series or body style, numbers are for all 1964 Chevelles including convertibles where they would have a convertible top. Colors are listed total number of sales from most to least. Two-tone combinations are listed separately.
