1964 Malibu SS

Fisher Body Number Plate - Kansas City, Missouri Assembly Plant (KC)

Body plates at Kansas City did use group option codes when applicable. Body dates of months 1 through 9 were padded with a leading zero to make a 3-character body date. Kansas City did not make a distinction between an inline 6-cylinder engine and a V8 engine with the style number. This means that whether a Malibu sport coupe was to be built with an inline 6-cylinder engine or a V8 engine, Kansas City still shows the style as 5637 on the body plate. Kansas City used two blank formats of the Fisher Body Number plate.

The first blank was used until the first week of March. The first format blank plate has the text GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION on the first line and THIS CAR FINISHED WITH Magic-Mirror ACRYLIC LACQUER and BODY BY FISHER on the bottom three lines. The words STYLE, KC, BODY on the third line were consistent along with TRIM and PAINT on the fourth line and ACC. on the fifth line. The body date, style year and number, body number, trim code, and paint codes were stamped for the specific car as it was scheduled for production. Kansas City did not use a hyphen character between the year and style number but rather a space such as 64 5469 as well as two blank spaces between the plant designation letters KC and the body number such as KC 6578.

The body number was not padded with leading zeros so this could be anywhere from a 1-digit body number to a 4-digit body number as applicable for the time and style. Early Kansas City Fisher Body Number plates prior to at least 12B used a unique format for the body date.

A number or letter would indicate the month and 2-digit number for the day of the month. Examples would be 912 for September 12, 009 for October 9, N27 for November 27, and D04 for December 4. Interestingly Kansas City Fisher Body Number plates prior to at least 01D did not show the model year before the style number. From at least 01D forward a hyphen character would separate the model year from the style number.

Kansas City Fisher Body Number plates changed the blanks around the first week in March. The verbiage THIS CAR FINISHED WITH Magic-Mirror ACRYLIC LACQUER on the bottom was removed leaving only BODY BY FISHER.

Convertibles built at Kansas City will have one additional number after the 3-digit paint code, 1 for a white convertible top, 2 for a black convertible top, or 3 for a beige convertible top. An example might be 9121 for a Silver Blue car (code 912) and white convertible top or 9383 for a Desert Beige car (code 938) and beige convertible top.
