1964 Malibu SS

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

The 1964 Malibu SS is easily identified by its VIN; 1964 is the only year the VIN started with the model year and consisted of 12 alphanumeric characters.

First Position Number - model year
4 - model year 1964

Second & Third Position Numbers - engine type
57 - 6-cylinder Malibu SS
58 - 8-cylinder Malibu SS

Fourth & Fifth Position Numbers - body style
37 - sport coupe
67 - convertible

Sixth Position Letter - assembly plant
A - Atlanta, Georgia
B - Baltimore, Maryland
H - Fremont, California
K - Kansas City, Missouri
L - Los Angeles (Van Nuys), California

Seventh through Twelfth Numbers - Sequential plant numbers
The sequential starting number for each assembly plant started with 100001.Each assembly plant sequenced all Chevelles regardless of series or body style. While multiple plants will have the same sequence numbers, it would be relatively rare for two of the same series to have identical sequence numbers. The difference in the VINs would, naturally, be the assembly plant code. Production at the Kansas City plant topped 100,000 units sometime in late June so the VIN sequence for late Kansas City-built Chevelles would be in the 2nnnnn range.
