1964 Malibu SS

Wheels/Wheel Covers/Hub Caps/Tires

Wheels used on the 1964 Chevelle are stamped steel and measure 14x5. Standard tire size is 6.50x14 for all except station wagons and sedan pickups that got 7.00x14 tires. Blackwall tires were standard fare with whitewall tires being optional. The standard tires were the typical of the day 2-ply with a 4-ply rating. Several optional tires were available with a higher 6-ply rating.

Hub caps and wheel covers are often lumped into a single term but, in fact, are quite different. Hub caps were standard on all Chevelles in 1964 with the exception of the Malibu SS series. Hub caps cover only the lug nuts on the wheel where wheel covers cover the entire wheel.

The Malibu SS has its own wheel cover, a unique three-bar "spinner" or "flipper" design. These were not available as an option on any other 1964 Chevelle series.

(1) The Chevrolet Parts & Accessory Catalog, circa 1972, shows a single service part number for 1964 & 1965 hub cap #3840899. It has been suggested the two years have different size ribs. The image shown is a 1965 hub cap.
