1967 SS 396
Body Styles
The 1967 SS 396 was available in two body styles, 2-door sport coupe and 2-door convertible. The base engine for the SS 396 series is a 325-hp 396 cid V8; two optional 396 cid engines were available as options, RPO L34 rated at 350-hp and RPO L78 rated at 375-hp .
Chevrolet described both body styles as 5-passenger capacity; three in the rear and two in the front. Seems kind of odd since the SS 396 came standard with a front bench seat easily accommodating three people. Maybe it was just GM's way of keeping the allure of sportiness for the two body styles.
The 1967 model year saw a modest body redesign that was matched across the GM A-body platform. The boxy look was gone in favor of sharper, flowing lines. While the 115-inch wheelbase remained the same one could certainly see the complete new body style and not possibly confuse it with a 1964 or 1965 Chevelle. Gone was the Malibu SS and replaced with the now iconic SS 396. The new ‘strut-back’ roofline with a recessed rear window on the Malibu and SS 396 sport coupe gave the Chevelle an exciting new look. This new sport coupe roofline changed the sport coupe style number ‘37’ to a new style number ’17.’
