1967 SS 396

Fisher Body Number Plate - Atlanta, Georgia Assembly Plant (ATL)

Body plates at Atlanta used group option codes where applicable. Body dates of months 1 through 9 were padded with a leading zero to make a 3-character body date. Atlanta did not make a distinction between an inline 6-cylinder engine and a V8 engine with the style number. This means that whether a Malibu sport coupe was to be built with an inline 6-cylinder engine or a V8 engine, Atlanta still shows the style as 13617 on the body plate.

Naturally since the SS 396 was it's own series, the style number will always be 13817(1). The blank plate has the text GENERAL MOTORS COPORATION on the first line and BODY BY FISHER on the bottom lines. The words/abbreviation ST (for Fisher Body style), ATL, BODY on the second line were consistent along with TR (for interior trim) and PAINT on the third line.

The body date, style year and number, body number, trim code, paint code, and any group option number and letter codes were stamped for the specific car as it was scheduled for production. Atlanta used a hyphen character between the year and style number such as 67-13817, no space or a blank space (or spaces) between if the plant designation letters ATL and the body number if necessary to fill a 5-character space such as ATL 0721 or ATL17015. The last line (or two lines if needed) are for group option codes.

Atlanta plates will often have a hand stamped number somewhere on it's face. It's believed this is a Fisher Body inspector's stamp.

Atlanta trim codes typically have an -A or -B following the 3-digit trim code number; -A noted a bench seat and -B noting bucket seats. This a bit redundant since bench and bucket seats of the same color have different 30digit trim code numbers.

(1) No convertibles were built at the Atlanta plant so you should never find a 13867 style number on a 1967 Atlanta Fisher Body Number Plate.
