1967 SS 396

Fisher Body Number Plate - Fremont, California Assembly Plant (BF)

Body plates at Fremont did not use group option codes. Body dates of months 1 through 9 were padded with a leading zero to make a 3-character body date. Fremont did make a distinction between an inline 6-cylinder engine and a V8 engine with the style number. This means that if a Malibu sport coupe was to be built with an inline 6-cylinder engine the Fisher Body Style number would show 13517; for a V8 engine, Fremont will show the style as 13617 on the body plate.

Naturally since the SS 396 was it's own series, the style number will always be 13817 or 13867.

The 1967 number plate is more in line with other Chevelle Fisher Body and Chevrolet assembly plants. The first line has GENERAL MOTORS COPORATION and BODY BY FISHER on the bottom line. The words/abbreviation ST (for Fisher Body style), BODY, BF on the second line were consistent along with TR (for interior trim) and PAINT on the third line.

There is typically a hand-stamped number on the plate. It's believed this is a final inspector's stamp at Fisher Body. Some body plates have been found without an inspector's stamp.

Note BODY and PAINT verbiage follows the body number and paint codes.

The left-most numbers on the 4th line is dealer's order number to the plant,  the right-most numbers are found on the Trim Broadcast Sheet and build sheet. Sometime during the 12B timeframe, this changed to a 6-digit number.
