1967 SS 396
Wheels/Wheel Covers/Hub Caps/Tires
Wheels used on the 1967 Chevelle SS 396 are stamped steel and measure 14x6. Standard tire size is F70-14 for the SS 396 and 7.75x14 for sedan pickups with a 396 cubic inch engine. Special red stripe tires were standard fare on the SS 396 with whitewall tires being optional. The standard tires were the typical of the day 2-ply with a 4-ply rating.
Hub caps and wheel covers are often lumped into a single term but, in fact, are quite different. Hub caps cover only the lug nuts on the wheel where wheel covers cover the entire wheel. Hub caps were standard on all SS 396 Chevelles in 1967 except those ordered with optional disc brakes. Hub caps were supplied when no optional wheel cover was ordered. These differed slightly from the 1966 hub caps. Where the 1966 version has dark gray ribs, dark center with bright bowtie the 1967 has light gray ribs, bright center with black bowtie.

Three optional wheel covers were available. RPO P01 is a full wheel cover available on any 1967 Chevelle with a price tag of only $21.10. The SS 396 P01 wheel cover got red-lettered SS on a black background. Also available was a simulated wire wheel under RPO P02 for $73.75 and a simulated mag-style wheel cover under RPO N96 for the same $73.75 price tag.
Optional RPO P01 full wheel covers were available on any
1967 Chevelle, including the SS 396. When ordered on an SS 396 the
center cap displays the "SS" logo.
RPO N96
simulated mag-style wheel covers were a $73.75 option on any 1967
Chevelle but only about 2% of owners checked that option box
resulting in 6,974 sets being sold.
RPO N96 mag-style wheel covers were optional in 1967 on any
Chevelle. The 1966 version of this wheel cover is only partially cut
out in between the spokes compared to the 1967 version that has this
entire area between the spokes cut out. Compare this version to the
1966 version in the 1966 section.
The 1967 Chevelle rally wheel was part of the J52 disc brake option
and not available as a separate option. There are actually 2 rally
wheel types in 1967, the 14x6 wheel used on the SS 396 (code stamped
“DG” by the air valve stem) and the 14x5 wheel used on all non-SS
396 applications (code stamped “DA” by the air valve stem). The
offset is different for these two wheels as well; the 14x5 “DA”
rally wheel has a 0.50-inch offset where the 14x6 “DG” rally wheel
has a 0.88-inch offset.
