Fisher Body Number Plate - Fremont, California Assembly Plant (BF)

Fremont does make a distinction between an inline 6-cylinder engine and a V8 engine with the style number. This means that if a Malibu sport coupe was to be built with an inline 6-cylinder engine the style number would read 13537 where one destined to be assembled with a V8 engine would show 13637 on the body plate. The words/abbreviation ST (for style), BF, BDY on the second line were consistent along with TR (for trim) and PNT on the third line. The body date, style year and number, body number, trim code, and paint codes were stamped for the specific car as it was scheduled for production. Fremont did used a hyphen character between the year and style number such as 69-13437 and the body number was padded with leading zeros to create a 5-digit body number but does have a space between the Fisher Body plant designation letters and the body number such as BF 00544.

The 3-digit trim code number did not differentiate between bench or bucket seats since the 3-digit trim code itself was enough to distinguish between a bench and bucket seat type. For example, trim code 755 is a black vinyl bench seat whereas trim code 756 is a black vinyl bucket seat. Fremont trim tags do have some extra information, one being the RPO code B80 (roof drip moulding). Malibu series Fremont sedan pickups also have RPO B90 (door window frame moulding) noted. Fremont did not separate the lower and upper body color letters/number with a dash (or hyphen) character.

Body dates of months 1 through 9 were padded with a leading zero to make a 3-character body date such as 06B. Fremont tags also have two 6-digit numbers just after the body date. These are internal data processing numbers. The first 6-digit number’s origin comes from block 24 of the broadcast sheet (or build sheet if you will). The second 6-digit number is a concatenation of the 2-digit number in block 10 and a 4-digit number found in block 24 of the broadcast sheet.
