1969 SS 396
Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
The 1969 SS 396 can no longer be identified by the VIN. Since the SS 396 was now an option, the VIN will not identify that option.

Eighth through Thirteenth Numbers - Sequential plant numbers
The sequential starting number for each assembly plant started with
300001.Each assembly plant sequenced all Chevelles regardless of
series or body style. While multiple plants will have the same
sequence numbers, it would be relatively rare for two of the same
series to have identical sequence numbers. The difference in the
VINs would, naturally, be the assembly plant code. Production at the
Kansas City plant topped 100,000 units sometime in late February so the
VIN sequence for late Kansas City-built Chevelles would be in the
4nnnnn range. Production at the Baltimore plant topped 100,000 units
in mid-July so the VIN sequence for mid-July and later Baltimore
Chevelles built would be in the 4nnnnnn range.
VIN Plate Location
The location of the VIN plate is located on the top left of the dash. This allowed law enforcement, and anyone else, to verify the VIN without having to open the car door to find it. One negative side effect is the special rosette rivets are no longer visible making it harder to detect whether or not the VIN plate has been removed.
