The 396/325 was the base engine for the SS 396 series. This engine was also an option in the 134/13680 El Camino only and 1,865 El Caminos were ordered with the L35 engine. The two optional 396 engines, the 360hp L34 and 375hp L78 could also be ordered as optional engines in the SS 396 series as well as the El Camino.
The Positive Engine Ventilation system on the 396 retained the same provisions as its L6 and small-block V8 cousins with only an oil breather cap and PCV valve system to capture crankcase vapors.
The upper alternator bracket shown here is a 1966 item only. Note the
carburetor return spring is attached to a tab on the bracket; in 1967
this tab was removed on the 396 and the carburetor return spring attached
to the coil bracket.
Another example of the upper alternator bracket with carburetor return
spring. This Chevelle also has air conditioning and is correctly equipped
with the fan shroud.
Another example of air conditioning but this engine has a metal shroud.
Generator (alternator) is not mounted in accordance with the
Assembly Instruction
Manual. Top brace should be behind generator and adjustment bolt
should be inserted from the back side. See
Generator page for correct
mounting.
